The Leica M11 Monochrom is a digital full-frame rangefinder camera designed exclusively for black-and-white photography. Its monochrome 60-megapixel sensor works without a colour filter array and has a native sensitivity of ISO 125. Important: The camera records no colour information. Blown highlights cannot be reconstructed from intact red, green or blue channels. For important high-contrast subjects, record DNG files and assess the histogram and highlight warning before the scene changes.
The Leica M11 Monochrom is a digital full-frame rangefinder camera that records black-and-white images only. Leica introduced it on 13 April 2023 as the fourth generation of its Monochrom M cameras.
Its monochrome BSI CMOS sensor has neither a colour filter array nor the need to interpolate colour information. It can therefore record luminance detail particularly directly. The deliberate absence of colour data is also its most important limitation: an M11 Monochrom file cannot be converted back into a genuine colour photograph after capture.
The camera is particularly suited to black-and-white street, reportage, documentary, portrait, landscape, architectural, available-light and fine-art photography.

Special editions or later variants must be identified separately by their order and serial numbers. For insurance, buying used and servicing, the exterior colour designation alone is not sufficient.

A conventional digital camera records different proportions of red, green and blue through a colour filter array. Missing colour information for each pixel is then calculated by interpolation. The M11 Monochrom, by contrast, records luminance information only.
Practical consequences:
The camera offers three DNG and JPEG resolutions. According to Leica, the entire sensor area is used regardless of the selected resolution.

L-DNG is the logical starting point for maximum detail and large prints. M-DNG or S-DNG can be useful when storage requirements and processing speed are more important than maximum cropping latitude.
Leica explicitly identifies ISO 125 as the native sensitivity. The manually selectable and Auto ISO range extends from ISO 125 to ISO 200,000.

Leica describes the M11 Monochrom as offering a high dynamic range but does not publish a directly comparable numerical dynamic-range curve for every ISO setting. This page therefore does not state an unverified number of exposure stops.
With a colour camera, a clipped colour channel may sometimes be partially reconstructed from the remaining channels. A purely monochrome sensor offers no such reserve.
Recommendations:
Because no colour information is stored, the separation of particular colours must be influenced at the time of capture. A colour filter placed in front of the lens renders similar colours lighter and complementary colours darker.

The actual effect depends on subject colours, light source, filter density and lens. Comparison exposures are advisable before important photographs.
Important: Yellow, orange, red and green filters permanently alter the recorded luminance values. Because the file contains no colour information, an unsuitable filter effect cannot later be reversed by using a different colour-channel mix.
The M11 Monochrom meters through the image sensor in every metering mode, both when using the optical rangefinder and in Live View.

No metering method guarantees a correct exposure. The histogram, highlight warning and knowledge of the subject remain essential.

The mechanical shutter is the safer starting point for moving subjects, artificial light and flash. Test the electronic shutter under the actual lighting conditions.
Important: The electronic shutter can produce rolling-shutter distortion with movement and banding under some LED or artificial-light sources. Test it under identical lighting before an important sequence.
For long exposures, use a stable tripod, a charged battery, disable unnecessary wireless connections and protect the camera from stray light.

Focusing is performed by aligning the superimposed or split images in the bright central rangefinder patch. Small calibration errors become particularly apparent with very fast lenses, longer focal lengths and close subjects.
Live View displays the actual sensor image on the rear monitor or in the optional Visoflex 2. Magnification and focus peaking assist manual focusing.

The M11 Monochrom does not use the traditional removable baseplate. The battery and memory card are accessible from below. The USB-C port supports charging, power supply and data transfer as described in the Leica instructions.
The understated black body has no red Leica logo on the front. This design supports discreet work but does not alter the camera’s technical functions.

Internal storage adds capacity but does not replace an independent backup.
Important: The internal storage and SD card are located in the same camera body. Parallel recording therefore does not protect against loss, theft or major camera damage and is not a substitute for an external backup.
The camera has a Leica M mount with a sensor for the 6-bit coding of compatible Leica M lenses. Focusing is always manual.

Perspective Control displays a guide frame in Live View representing the expected crop after perspective correction. It is especially useful for architectural photography.

For an expensive used purchase, an inspection by Leica Customer Care or a qualified Leica dealer is advisable.
Important: A low shutter count alone does not prove good condition. Rangefinder calibration, sensor, internal storage, SD interface, USB-C, shutter and actual DNG files must be checked together.

Before updating the firmware:
The firmware version offered on Leica’s website may change and must be checked again before every update.
No. The sensor records luminance information only. A genuine colour image therefore cannot be created later from the DNG file.
The native sensitivity starts at ISO 125. This is the starting point when maximum technical latitude is more important than a fast shutter speed.
The principal difference is the monochrome sensor without a colour filter array. The M11 Monochrom creates black-and-white files only and offers no subsequent mixing of colour channels. Filter effects and tonal separation therefore need to be considered at capture.
The camera has a Leica M mount. Leica M lenses and suitable M-compatible lenses, including Voigtländer VM lenses, can generally be used. Coding, bright-line frames, minimum focusing distance and mechanical compatibility must be checked for the particular lens.
Colour filters are not compulsory. Yellow, orange, red or green filters can, however, alter greyscale rendering at capture. Because no colour information is stored, their effect cannot later be fully reproduced or reversed.
