Important distinction: A camera documented in the Leica section is not necessarily still available as a new product. Historical and discontinued systems remain listed because manuals, compatibility, buying used and serviceability continue to matter.
This page is the central entry point to the Leica section of the Photographer Wiki. It classifies current and historical camera systems and links to the relevant system pages, instruction manuals, firmware information, accessories and service topics.
Individual camera models and detailed technical data are maintained on the subordinate system and model pages. This keeps the overview compact and avoids conflicting information.
Leica Camera is headquartered at Leitz-Park in Wetzlar, Germany. The Ur-Leica developed by Oskar Barnack in 1913/1914 used 35 mm cinema film horizontally and paved the way for the 24 × 36 mm still-photography format. The first production Leica I was introduced at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1925.
The photographic product range comprises several different concepts:
Historical models remain documented in the wiki even when they are no longer part of the regular new-product range. This is particularly important for buying used, accessories, compatibility, repairs and instruction manuals.

The official Leica camera overview currently focuses in particular on M, SL and Q, as well as D-Lux and SOFORT. At the review date, the Leica D-Lux 8 is the only camera listed in Leica's compact-camera category. V-Lux, C-Lux, C, X and Digilux therefore remain documented as earlier or used product lines. The S-System continues to have an official system and service page. CL and TL are documented in this wiki as discontinued APS-C systems. Product availability, variants and special editions may change at short notice and should be checked on the Leica website before buying or updating an article.
Important classification: “Documented in the Leica system” does not automatically mean “currently available as a new product”. Historical and discontinued lines deliberately remain part of this overview because of manuals, lens compatibility, buying used and serviceability.

This table is a concise product-status guide, not a complete list of every colour, kit or special edition.
The M-System stands for compact camera bodies, M lenses and a reduced working method. Classic M cameras use an optical rangefinder and are focused manually. The Leica M EV1 transfers the manual M working method to a permanently integrated electronic viewfinder; other digital M models can use the Visoflex 2 depending on model compatibility. The system includes digital colour and Monochrom cameras as well as analogue models for 35 mm film.

Further comparisons:
The historical Leica R-System comprises analogue and digital SLR cameras with the Leica R mount. The Leica R 6.2, introduced in 1992, combines a mechanically controlled shutter with manual exposure and two TTL metering methods. It remains capable of taking photographs without batteries; batteries are required for metering and viewfinder displays.
The Leica R9 of 2002 marked the end of Leica's analogue R-SLR development. With the Digital-Modul-R delivered from 2005, it could be converted into a manually focused 10 MP CCD digital camera with a crop factor of 1.37. This modular system is historically and photographically interesting, but today requires particularly careful inspection of the battery, sensor, Power Unit, DMR focusing screen, memory card and repairability.
Suitable for:
Points to consider:
Further pages:
The Q family combines a full-frame sensor with a fixed fast lens, autofocus, an electronic viewfinder and a macro function. Depending on the model, the physical lens focal length is either 28 mm or 43 mm. The camera is especially suitable when high image quality and a manageable kit are more important than changing lenses.
Suitable for:
Points to consider:
The SL-System is a mirrorless full-frame system with the L-Mount, autofocus and extensive photography and video functions. The current SL3 family comprises the SL3, SL3-S and SL3-P, with different priorities in resolution, speed and hybrid production. It can be used with Leica SL lenses and compatible L-Mount lenses from alliance partners. M and R lenses can be fitted using suitable adapters; functions and compatibility must be checked for each particular combination.
System and model pages:
Suitable for:
Points to consider:
T, TL, TL2 and the digital CL are discontinued compact APS-C system cameras with the L-Mount. Leica originally presented the CL and TL2 as technically related cameras with different operating concepts: the CL has an integrated EVF and direct control dials, whereas the TL2 relies on a large touchscreen and an optional Visoflex. The detailed German page documents firmware versions, TL lenses, adapter practice, independent reviews and buying used.
These product lines remain relevant to the wiki particularly for:
Before buying used, check battery availability, charger, firmware version, display, viewfinder, interfaces and current repair support.
The S-System was developed as a professional digital medium-format system. The Leica S3 uses a 64 MP Leica ProFormat sensor. The system is aimed mainly at applications where high resolution, controlled workflows and an integrated camera-and-lens system are essential.
Suitable for:
Points to consider:
The D-Lux 8 combines a Four Thirds sensor with a fixed fast zoom lens whose angle of view corresponds to approximately 24–75 mm in 35 mm format. It is a flexible travel camera that does not require lens changes.
The public Leica compact-camera overview – German compares D-Lux, V-Lux, C, C-Lux and X cameras and also classifies the analogue Mini, Minilux and CM series.
The SOFORT 2 is a hybrid instant camera. Images can be stored digitally, selected and printed as instant photographs. When used with the Leica FOTOS app, it can also print images from a smartphone or compatible Leica camera.
By contrast, the first Leica SOFORT of 2016 exposes Instax Mini film directly and offers no digital preview. Its differences, technical specifications, printing workflow and ongoing film costs are explained on the Leica SOFORT and SOFORT 2 detail page – German.
Earlier lines such as X, C and previous D-Lux and V-Lux generations are documented by model on the Leica compact-cameras page.
Leitz Phone 1, 2 and 3 were manufactured by Sharp for the Japanese market. They combine a 1-inch sensor, a fixed wide-angle camera, RAW options and model-dependent Leitz Looks. Importing one involves additional questions about mobile-network compatibility, language, updates, warranty and service.
Leitz Phone 1–3: overview, operation and import guidance – German
The international Leitzphone announced in 2026 is based on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra platform. It combines a 50 MP 1-inch main camera, a 50 MP ultra-wide camera and a 200 MP periscope telephoto module offering optical coverage from 75 to 100 mm. Leica Essential, RAW controls, the physical camera ring and Content Credentials are central features, but the specific regional product and software status must be checked before purchase.

| Leica S mount | Leica S | Dedicated mount for the digital medium-format system |
| Fixed lens | Leica Q, D-Lux, SOFORT and other compact cameras | The lens cannot be changed; lens and sensor form a permanently matched system |
Adapters can make it possible to use older Leica M and Leica R lenses on suitable L-Mount cameras. Before use, check at least:
Depending on the product, the Leica download site provides full instructions, quick-start guides, technical specifications, brochures and firmware. The Photographer Wiki records these documents centrally in the Manuals section instead of keeping uncontrolled copies on several camera pages.

Before every firmware update, check the model-specific instructions, installed version, battery charge, memory card and data-backup information. Firmware files must never be exchanged between similarly named camera models.
Before a firmware update: Match the exact model designation and target file, fully charge the battery, document personal settings or profiles and read the complete model-specific update instructions.
Accessories are documented by model and system. These include in particular:
